What can we do in Parliament?

Parliament is where all the laws are made. There are so many issues you can take up.

Like What?

To begin with, you can ask your Member of Parliament (MP) to ask the minster involved when legislation will be in place to allow transpeople to change their birth certificates or to marry somebody of the opposite sex. You can ask them to make representations to remove disqualification from insurance if a transperson does not reveal their past medical history. You can write to the Chair of the Parliamentary Forum on Transsexualism and ask them to consult with ordinary transpeople through TransActive-UK instead of being restricted to the unaccountable Press For Change. You can ask your MP to support us in our aims and not oppose us at every turn. You can remind MP's that until the mid-seventies, homosexuality was considered a mental illness is the same way that transsexuality still is today. You can ask your MP to persuade the House of Commons, the House of Lords and their own political party's to have full equal opportunities policies that include transpeople.

What Else?

You can ask MP's why transpeople are penalised by the tax and benefits systems when they are not allowed to take part in heterosexual marriage. You can ask why their relationship is treated the same as a homosexual relationship and why pension rights do not apply to heterosexual partners where one of them is transsexual. You can ask why a transsexual person in a monogamous, heterosexual relationship is not currently allowed to adopt a child. You can ask your MP for their opinion on various related issues, and you can ask them to ask the relevant ministers for official policy.

How do I contact my Member of Parliament?
